Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) affect everyone! One quarter (25%) of sexually active teens get an STI each year. You can get an STI by having sex of any kind: vaginal, oral, anal and while rare, even kissing. Because many STI’s do not have symptoms, it is often impossible to tell if someone has an STI. Most STI’s can be treated and go away, but others can’t be cured.
THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF STDS
Viral: caused by a virus and you will have it forever. Some are even deadly. These include:
- Hepatitis B
- HPV (Human Papilloma Virus): Genital Warts
Bacterial:these treated with antibiotics but cause permanent damage if left untreated. These include:
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF AN STI
- Unusual Discharge (vagina, penis, anus, mouth)
- Itching, Burning Pain
- Sores (painful or painless)
- Swollen joint
- Abdominal Pain
- Testicular Pain
- Sometimes….no symptoms!
The condom is the only birth control method that can REDUCE YOUR RISK of spreading an STI. It is important to know your partner and if you have had unprotected sex, get tested!
