I am Worried About Someone

If you’re worried that a friend, loved one, or someone else you know may need help or might try to hurt themselves, trust your instinct. Here’s how to find help for someone in need:

What to do:

  • Listen attentively and non-judgmentally
  • Ask if he/she is thinking about death or dying
  • If yes, ask if he/she has a plan to end their life.
  • Take all intents or threats seriously.
  • Get help or assistance immediately.
  • Never leave a suicidal individual alone unless there is a serious risk to your well-being

If there is apparent immediate danger, ACT:

  • Call Lebanon County Crisis Intervention at (717-274-3363).

What NOT to do:

  • Do not leave him/her alone or let him/her go off alone.
  • Do not be judgmental.
  • Do not argue, debate, analyze, or moralize.
  • Do not try to cheer him/her up.
  • Do not try to shock or challenge (e.g. saying “Oh, go ahead and do it if you want to!”)
  • Do not assume the person will be fine without professional assessment
