Class Descriptions

  • Mental Health First Aid – Adults Module
Preparing you to help others experiencing mental distress. In the same way that CPR helps you assist an individual having a medical emergency, Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health-related problem or crisis, even if you have no clinical training. In this course, you will learn to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use. The Adult Course is appropriate for anyone age 16 and older who wants to learn how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health-related crisis.

Topics include anxiety, depression, psychosis, suicide and substance use. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a nationally recognized certification. This workshop is designed for every member of the community. It will be especially beneficial to social service agency personnel, school and college teachers, physicians, nurses, hospitals, veteran’s affairs, law enforcement, first responders, church personnel, parents and family members.
By the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:

    – Identify, understand and respond to the signs and symptoms of addiction and mental illness
    – Recognize the risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems
    – Learn about depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis and addiction disorders
    – Apply the 5-step action plan to assess a situation and provide help
    – Understand what local resources are available and where to turn to guide someone towards getting appropriate professional help
  • Mental Health First Aid – Youth Module
Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among children and adolescents ages 12-18.
  • QPR stands for Question, Persuade and Refer. Three simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. With the Mental Health Awareness addition to the QPR, participants will briefly learn how to recognize some of the more common mental health signs and symptoms and how to response to someone who needs their support. For example, participants will recognize when someone might be having a panic attack and learn necessary skills to help in that event.

Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. QPR is a nationally certified program taught by certified trainers. Those completing the course will receive a certificate. The course focuses on training individuals to be “Gatekeepers” or someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. Gatekeepers can be anyone but include parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, ministers, doctors, nurses, office supervisors, squad leaders, foremen, police officers, advisors, caseworkers, firefighters and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide.

    QPR Gatekeeper Training teaches you:
    – How to Question, Persuade and Refer someone who may be suicidal
    – How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide
    – The common causes of suicidal behavior
    – The warning signs of suicide
    – How to get help for someone in crisis
  • Mental Well-Being / Self-Care is an interactive educational experience that covers the following:
    – Defining good well-being and self-care
    – Defining signs and symptoms of concern
    – Risk factors related to impact on wellbeing
    – Developing a self-care plan and setting goals
    – Resources for self-care and support.
  • Mental Health Awareness (MHA)is designed to educate participants in understanding some of the more common mental health diagnoses, reduce stigma and promote emotional wellness. This training touches on depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, addiction, panic attack and eating disorders. Participants will learn to recognize signs and symptoms and best practices on ways to respond and assist someone struggling with a mental health challenge.
  • Trauma Informed Care Training 101 & 102
Trauma Informed Care (TIC) is an approach that assumes that an individual is more likely than not to have a history of trauma. TIC recognizes the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledges the role trauma may play in an individual’s life. TIC requires a paradigm shift from “what is wrong with this person” to “what has happened to this person.” Participants will learn how to recognize trauma and how to respond.
  • Trauma 105 – How Trauma Affects Our Children, for parents and caregivers
This workshop is designed to provided introductory information about the impact of trauma and the power of relationships to help children heal. The more parents and caregivers understand how trauma effects children, the more they will understand the reasons for kids’ behaviors and emotions, and the more they will be able to help them cope.
